Movies that Ruthless Reviews eagerly anticipates in 2018

2017 was a pretty good year for movies. Kevin covered the great, the guilty pleasures and the ugly movies in this thorough review. Team Ruthless also threw in their 2 cents, so we are now turning the page and are looking forward to more of the same in 2018. Without further ado, here are a few films that we look forward to with great anticipation. This list is in no particular order.

Deadpool 2 (David Leitch) Ruthless liked Deadpool so there is no reason to think that the Untitled Deadpool sequel will be any different. Well, there are in actuality a LOT of reasons, but we at Ruthless are eternal optimists about sequels. If the movie is anything like the spoof trailer, Wet-on-Wet, it should be fantastic.

Ready Player One (Steven Spielberg) Kevin swears up and down that the book was great and what can you say about someone with a resume like Spielberg? In this movie the race is on for finding an Easter Egg that will reveal to the finder an unimaginable fortune. Along with the HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS, the lucky finder will also have control of The Oasis, the ultimate Virtual Reality World. Nerds unite on this one.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Terry Gilliam) This on again and off again movie was 20 years in the making. Terry Gilliam just does things his way and has made some of the strangest and controversial films ever. Well, the trailer is certainly strange and was made in 2013, so with the addition of Adam Driver and Jonathan Pryce who plays Quixote, who knows what the final film will look like. Anyone who can make films like The Life of Brian and Brazil deserves anticipation.

Isle of Dogs (Wes Anderson) This thing looks fantastic, and I don’t care that much for animation. The cast is amazing: Scarlett Johansson, Greta Gerwig, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Ed Norton, Jeff Goldblum and Harvey Keitel for starters. Cannine numbers had reached critical mass in Japan and there was an outbreak of dog flu. Because of this the dogs were exiled to a place called Trash Island. I can hear the lamentations of social justice animal warriors already. Things got complicated when a 12 year-old boy crash landed on the island, looking for his lost dog.

The Irishman (Martin Scorsese) The trailer looks amazing. Can Robert DiNiro possibly redeem himself after something as horrible as Dirty Grandpa? Just the name of Scorsese is enough to get the movie on any anticipated list, but look who else is here. How about Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino as well? The rest of the cast is equally impressive, and how can anyone who loves movies be anything but excited about another film by Scorsese.

Avengers: Infinity War (Anthony and Joe Russo) We are not that impressed, but everyone else apparently is. I think I will threaten Plexico with resigning unless he submits to reviewing another Avengers film. Marvel is at it again and the fanboys are shitting themselves in anticipation.

Sicario 2: Soldado (Stefano Sollima) Just the mere presence of the original film puts this one on the list. OK, I know that Villeneuve did not do this one, but no matter, the trailer looks delicious. Del Toro and Brolin return, but not Emily Blunt, which is O.K., too. If this thing is anywhere near as cold and ruthless as the first one, I’m all in.

First Man (Damien Chazelle) The maker of La La Land returns with Ryan Gosling to make a movie about Neil Armstrong. If that is not enough to peak your interest, then I can’t help you. With technology that is medieval compared to what we have today, we put a man on the moon over 50 years ago. This is the story of that first man.

Widows (Steve McQueen) The maker of 12 Years a Slave is back with a movie that looks irresistible. It also stars Elizabeth Dibecki, Colin Ferrell, Liam Neeson and Daniel Kaluuya from Get Out fame. The movie is about 4 women who have nothing in common but debts left behind by the criminal activities of their respective husbands. They decide to take their fate into their own hands.

Note: The above trailer appears to be Black Widows and is mislabeled. As soon as the correct one is available, I’ll put it up.

Annihilation (Alex Garland) When you have the great Natalie Portman (Leon: The Professional and Black Swan) in a movie written and directed by the guy who did Ex Machina, you know it has the potential to be great. Portman is a biologist who is determined to find out what happened to her husband. What she finds is something that she cannot explain. There appear to be heavy Lovecraftian elements in this movie, based on a book.

Let us know that you think. There is no Honorable Mention list as the list would be just too long. Please comment below or send your hate mail to the links here.
