Why has Nobody Made a Game of Thrones Open World RPG Yet?

With HBO’s epic medieval fantasy Game of Thrones now in its final season, dedicated fans are already getting worried about the withdrawals they’re going to be dealing with when it comes to an end. This certainly won’t be the last we see of Westeros, as there are numerous spin-offs reportedly in the pipeline. But, just like with the next installment of George RR. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, we have absolutely no idea when to expect a new series to drop. It really would make sense if there was a proper Game of Thrones console game for players to get stuck into.

Game of Thrones has been an unprecedented success, and its viewership has increased massively since the first season aired in 2011. The premiere of season 8 drew in 17.4 million viewers and set a multi-platform record. The series generates slightly more than $1 billion annually, which is a massive return for television. With so much money involved, Game of Thrones is being milked as much as possible. The franchise has already spread way beyond just television, and there are various games and merchandise helping it to expand.

One of the most popular games on offer based on HBO’s series is the Game of Thrones online slot from Microgaming. The game features sigils and characters from the series and can be played at LeoVegas. It is also available at other sites, but LeoVegas is among the largest in the UK and offers players good rewards. In addition to the slot game, there is also the Game of Thrones RPG from Telltale Games. This was released on consoles, PC, and mobile in 2014, and followed a completely unique set of characters who existed within the wider world of the show. There was only one season of this, though, as the second was canceled after the majority closure of the developing studio in 2018. Despite having a fairly intriguing storyline, the Telltale Games offering was merely a point and click adventure with little action.

Many gamers and fans of Game of Thrones feel that the series deserves a more detailed adventure worthy of the high-powered consoles that exist today. Players have already experienced sprawling open world epics like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from CD Projekt Red and Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar Games. These games have proved that there is no limit to what can be achieved in games now, and there is absolutely no reason why Westeros can’t be recreated in the same way. If someone were to make it, they may have to focus on using one character due to the sheer scale of the story. Someone like the Hound, who has moved around a lot in the series could be a good protagonist.

If a studio doesn’t make an epic open world offering based on Game of Thrones, it would feel like a missed opportunity. There are thousands of players who would love to feel as though they are immersed in the world of Westeros, and a game would surely live long in everyone’s memory.
