Twenty Movies That Guys Love: Part 2

Apocalypto (2006)

Apocalypto (2006)

Apocalypto is very different from the rest of the movies listed in this article and, frankly speaking, is rather different from practically any other movie you have watched before. It is a multi-genre film as it has elements of various different genres: starting from a historical movie and ending with a thriller. But there is a reason for it being that way.

Indeed, a lot of things take place in this 2006 film. The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that the movie is set in the 16th century and tells a story of the Mayan civilization. In the center of the picture, there is a small forest tribe led by a young tribe leader Jaguar Paw. Apocalypto shows the ways in which tribes would fight against each other, how they would protect their territories, and live their lives. As well as that, it gives the viewer an insight into the rivalries of the two tribes: the one led by Jaguar Paw and the one led by Zero Wolf, and how they deal with each other.

Little do they know though… After all, the movie is called Apocalypto for a reason. The name of it is rather symbolic, especially considering the fact that it has multiple meanings. All of which are, however, extremely fitting to the plot.

Marlon Brando and Salvatore Corsitto in The Godfather (1972)

The Godfather (1972)

There is not much that can be said about The GodFather without revealing all the plot twists that this movie has prepared for anyone who wants to find out more about the life of the Italian mafia. This is a classic film created by Francis Ford Coppola that was not only a success when it was first released 50 years ago but is a cult movie today, with the quotations from it still being in rotation.

The chronicles of the Corleone family will give you an insight into the 1972 Italy and the Mafiosi families that reigned it.

Zombieland (2009)

Another comedy film on the list, but this time it is a parody. If you are a big fan of zombie movies, but your passion for those is starting to die out, you need to watch Zombieland. Unlike a lot of other films in this niche, Zombieland is not trying to be original or stand out. On the contrary, it compiles all the cliches of the genre and pulls them all together into one movie. And this is exactly what makes this movie so unique.

Perhaps, the quality of the jokes used in the movie is somewhat questionable. But the plot of it as well as the absurdity of the general situation make it pretty much impossible to watch it without a big grin on. The group of the main survivors of the apocalypse are making it to Hollywood and crush Bill Murray’s mansion, and who would not want to be there during the end of the world from the ‘mad cow disease’? Besides, the movie is also edited as a ‘guide into surviving a zombie apocalypse’. So, if you ever need one, you know where to find it!

On top of everything else, Emma Stone who is playing one of the main characters of this horror comedy is real eye candy!

Jason Biggs, Molly Cheek, and Eugene Levy in American Pie (1999)

American Pie

American Pie is a cult movie, no matter what anyone says. It is the absolute classic that gets watched by all boys as soon as they hit puberty. And even if you are way past the tender age of 13 years old, this sex comedy is still a banger when it comes to making a list of the best guy movies of all time.

American Pie is the epitome of an x-rated American movie, and this is exactly what makes it worthy of a mention in this article. In fact, it is so loved by the audience that after the initial release of the first movie back in 1999, it got 7 more films and turned into a full-blown series.

The plot is rather primitive, but the jokes never get old: they are very sex-centered, which eventually can get repetitive, yet still very funny in their essence. But this is what American Pie is all about: after all, the story focuses on a group of teenagers who decide to lose their virginity before school ends.

Just make sure not to use any of the life hacks shown in American Pie no matter how good they look or how horny you are. Some of them are too traumatic to be executed. Instead, just go on a gamer’s dating site and find someone to do the deed with.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The Silence of the Lambs is believed to be one of the scariest yet the most advanced and intricate psychological thrillers of all time. Ever since it was released back in 1991, it has remained one of the most well-received horror movies that make your blood go cold. And not because of the multiple refined bloodbath scenes (although, it will be fair to say that those are present, too), but rather because of the intense psychological pressure that this film has on the viewers.

It tells a story of a psychopath serial killer, Hannibal Lecter, and lets the viewers to get an insight into the killer’s brain, to find out how it works and why exactly it is so messed up. However, in order to do it, you need to make sure that you stay focused on the movie. Up to this day, it is one of the most detailed films, every single scene and moment of which are important to understanding the message behind it. Indeed, The Silence of the Lambs has a lot to show and tell, but you need to watch and listen in order to read between the lines.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Berenger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, and Ken Watanabe in Inception (2010)

Inception (2010)

If you ever heard of Christopher Nolan and his movies, you already know you are in for one hell of a ride. If you have not, however, accommodate yourself and get ready to have your mind blown. Christopher Nolan is famous for his unusual directing and peculiar scripts. He is not the one to make a movie that is easy to understand or crack straightaway. There is always a little bit of ‘Oh!’ to his creations. No matter how well you think you understand everything, there will always be an utterly unexpected plot twist waiting for you just around the corner. And Inception, one of Christopher Nolan’s most famous films, is a great example of what his works are like.

In the center of the story, there is a professional thief Dom Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), who gets his information by infiltrating other people’s dreams. He is the best in the field and is capable of planting multiple layers of dreams in order to get to the target’s subconscious and get the information he needs. However, can Dom Cobb get into your subconscious? This film will leave you wondering whether everything around you is even real or not.

Get Out (2017)

Get Out is a relatively new film when compared to the majority of the titles mentioned in this article. Nonetheless, this movie tackles the problems that are genuinely timeless. In its essence, Get Out is a horror movie with elements of a thriller. However, in reality, the film is much more multi-layered and has a lot of dimension to it.

It is provocative, it is brave and most definitely it is extremely well-produced. In fact, Get Out received an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The story laid in the basis of this movie tells us about an interracial couple, an African-American man Chris and his Caucasian girlfriend Rose. The couple is about to celebrate another milestone in their relationship, and are traveling for a weekend getaway together to see Rose’s family and stay in their residence. At first, everything goes well, but an attentive viewer can spot that something is not right.

Quickly after that, Chris, too, notices some elements of disturbing behavior of his future in-laws. However, he could merely imagine how bad the truth really is.

Kristen Connolly in The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Some people like horror movies for a little thrill they give to them, some — simply for the plot. However, if you are a horror movie connoisseur, you will know that there are only so many plot lines that could be used to base a horror movie on. It is either paranormal activities, ancient dolls or other questionably safe objects, or dangerous animals. One way or another, if you watch a fair share of horror movies, after a little while you can predict the outcome of the film before it even starts, simply by looking at the poster.

This, however, is not the case with this 2011 horror movie. Despite looking like your average scary film the story of which unravels in the most predictable way possible, there is actually a bit more to The Cabin in the Woods. At first, the film does not look promising at all: a group of teenagers gets to a cabin in the middle of nowhere and weird, borderline disturbing stuff starts to happen. The jock is the first to go, and from there you can already guess where it all is headed. However, the film has a little unexpected twist that will leave you seated at the edge of your chair, excited to find out how it all ends.

Blade Runner (1982)

For those guys who are into fantasy and science fiction, there is not a better, more well-executed movie than The Blade Runner. Created back in 1982, the movie tells a story of the year 2019 where the world is threatened with replicants, bio-engineered humanoids. Rick Deckard, the main character of the movie, is a blade runner, a hit man who is given a task to track down the four replicants who reside on the Earth illegally.

Throughout the film, viewers are shown amazing futuristic landscapes, elegant fighting scenes, but the best part of the entire movie is its ending. It is believed to be one of the most beautiful, powerful movie ending scenes in the history of cinematography that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also extremely touching. In fact, in 1993 the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation because of it being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

In 2017, the film received a sequel, Blade Runner 2049, which, too, continues the story of replicants and the blade runner, yet it is set in a slightly more distant time for us, the year 2049. All The Blade Runner fans loved the sequel, so, in the grand scheme of events, it is, too, worthy of a mention in this list of the best guy movies of all time.

Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner (1982)

Joker (2019)

The last year’s Joker was one of the most highly anticipated movies of this decade, and all the expectations of the devoted fans were definitely met, if not exceeded. Joker became the first ever R-rated movie to gross over 1 billion dollars and received a lot of various awards.

Although there were some people who did not find the movie as exciting as they wanted it to be, the majority of the viewers were left speechless by Todd Phillips’ latest masterpiece. Even though the idea itself is not entirely new, and the film is based on DC Comics characters, the interpretation and presentation of it are absolutely unique.

The movie tells the story of a mentally ill man, Arthur Fleck, who has a medical condition that makes him laugh at inappropriate times. He relies on social services to provide him medication and works as a party clown. He is an aspiring stand-up comedian who has a lot of potential in him. However, all of that gets ruined by an unfortunate series of events that leads to complete decay of Fleck’s personality and turns him into a morbid serial killer.
