Rural Kenya in winter is colder than one would expect, even when you are from Wisconsin. The hospital where I am working is effectively isolated from the rest of the world. The phone works rarely, and the internet connection exists only in theory.

My profession is to witness and resist the inexorable pull of death. With an armamentarium of medications, I reverse death when it is possible, provide comfort when it is not, and occasionally facilitate its imposition of will on mortal flesh.

I work as a physician in the United States. At the time of this story, I was a medical student volunteering in Malawi.
